Bishops moved to a GL Assessment 11+ exam in 2023. It doesn't have the three papers like it used to (and SWGS still use). It has two papers and includes non-verbal reasoning. One paper will be verbal based and the other maths and non-verbal. Each test will have 45 minutes of work spread over one hour. Each paper will be broken into two or three sections. One of the big problems with an 11+ exam in sections is that exam technique becomes more important. Many students, particularly the clever ones, don't like to give up on questions and miss out on easier questions that follow. We often see boys fall below their potential in their first mock exam.
So observe your sons doing the test and have a chat afterwards about how they didn't maximise their potential.
Our progress tests are either included in the week's worksheets or can be found in the online drive in a folder called Progress. You can find how to access the drive on salisburyelevenplus.com/drive. If you haven't done so already, you will need to request access to this drive using the instructions on the page.
The target is what you would hope to achieve if you are on track to pass the 11+. If you are getting about the mean, then your likelihood of passing is good.
Foundation Course Tests
We strongly recommend downloading these tests, printing them off and completing them with a pencil (as you would in the exam) and then submitting them below.
The tests are short and so may not give a perfect reflection of your child's ability. They are just an indication. Children also often make a pig's ear of them, so don't worry too much if they are a disaster ...

(i) knowing the methods, tricks and traps for the question types that you will encounter.
(ii) knowing the landscape, learn what sort of features come up again and again. Learn how to look at a question and recognise what features are going to be important.
Lesson 16 - We don't have a timed test for this lesson either. However, you can fill in your answers for three questions from each question type to get an idea of how you are getting on compared to everybody else. Once the worksheet has been completed then you can submit your answers.

Easter Holiday
We are now moving towards mock exam season and practice papers at home time. To get you started with the format of the exam, we are asking you to do the free familiarisation test provided by GL Assessment. It is important for parents to prepare their children for sitting this test. Please tell them that it is not unusual for children to have a disaster on their first 11+ style test. If they do well, fantastic. If it is a disaster, don't panic. Many others will be the same and you will get better as you get used to the format. There is still plenty of time to prepare.
GL Assessment provide these free, but it does say tutors are not allowed to link to them. Please just google "GL Assessment free materials". When you get to the correct page on 11plus.gl-assessment.co.uk, there are six sections. You will need:
Print off the test-booklet and the answer sheets for verbal skills. Read the Parent's Guide. Give them 30 minutes to do the 26 questions in the English Section. For the verbal section, sit with them and work through the example for each section. Give them half an hour of working time for the 32 questions in this section. Stop the clock whenever you explain a section.
Allow them to keep an eye on the time as they do the tests.
When they have finished, please submit their answers here. When that has been done, feel free to mark it yourself and go through any mistakes they made. If the link is still not ready, photograph the answer sheets and email them to us.
Producing a report like this is a free service, for those on our course. We are happy to do this for anyone. All you need to do is register on salisburyelevenplus.com and then pay £20 for the report.
Summary
A report for any tests you submit will be added to your Personal Online Drive. We will include mock exam results to give you a full picture of their overall progress and to highlight any areas of weakness.
When you submit a test, you should receive an instant score together with some helpful hints on any you got wrong ...
So observe your sons doing the test and have a chat afterwards about how they didn't maximise their potential.
- Did they spend too long on any questions?
- Did they not read the questions carefully enough?
- Did they leave some boxes blank?
- Did they do everything in their heads with few workings out?
- When they finished with time to spare, did they go back and look at the questions they had marked as worth looking at again, if time?
Our progress tests are either included in the week's worksheets or can be found in the online drive in a folder called Progress. You can find how to access the drive on salisburyelevenplus.com/drive.
